Stollen
Stollen is a traditional German cake-like bread that contains dried fruit and is served in the Christmas season. Stollen is sweet, is essentially made from flour, yeast and water, with currants and other dried or candied fruit, orange and lemon zest, and the spices cardamom and cinnammon. Stollen may also be iced with sugar, and may contain marzipan, and in recent years has also become popular in the UK in a slightly sweeter version that is mass-produced.
Stollen in a more plain form was known in Germany even before the year 1500, and the real centre of stollen is the city of Dresden, with a strong tradition of making large stollen and reserving special utensils for consuming them.
