The March-April 2020 ITI Bulletin featured a light-hearted look at our German words used in English series in an article by HET Director Herbert Eppel together with the talented HET team. Titled From Angst to Hamburgers – to which one could add “via zeppelin and back” – it is an interesting journey through language evolution, import and migration, and looks at the technical translation challenge of how best to render a foreign word into the target language when the target language has already adopted that word but with a meaning different from that of the source language. A worrying example of that phenomenon is of course the word angst itself!
HET also monitor and showcase interesting contemporary occurrences of German words in the news here on our site and on Twitter as @hetranslations.
